Course overview
We will look into the design of greenhouses and glasshouses 鈥 a diverse subject that embraces the Crystal Palace in London, the Eden Project in Cornwall and a recently completed spectacular project in Singapore. The development will take us from Oxford鈥檚 Botanic Garden to Paxton鈥檚 鈥淕reat Stove鈥 at Chatsworth and the Temperate and Palm Houses of Kew.
Course description
We will examine the architecture of greenhouses and glasshouses, taking as examples greenhouses in the UK plus some exceptional examples worldwide. These will be considered from early beginnings, such as in the Oxford Botanic Garden, through Paxton鈥檚 Great Conservatory at Chatsworth to his Crystal Palace. The glass houses of Kew will be included, along with Cornwall鈥檚 extraordinary Eden Project. We will aim to understand how these buildings were constructed and how they have successfully supported such a remarkable range of climates.
