鈥淢y journey to WEA has been pretty incredible,鈥 Jay says. 鈥淚鈥檓 part of the Gypsy culture. I鈥檝e been involved in crime, I鈥檝e done some time. I never went to school, the English I was taught was from my uncle, and my wife, god bless her soul.鈥
鈥淚 found out about WEA through the Jobcentre. I鈥檝e learned how to construct sentences, and generally hold a conversation. I鈥檝e learnt how to manage my stress, and how to ask for help.鈥
In July 2022 Jay successfully completed the WEA Level 1 Award in Stress Awareness, his first ever qualification. He has completed nine WEA courses, including 鈥楳anaging Family Dynamics鈥, 鈥楳anaging Your Emotions鈥, and 鈥楪etting ready for Work or Volunteering鈥.
鈥淢y community are all word of mouth; what they know, they鈥檝e been taught from generation to generation. I鈥檝e kind of broken the cycle of that,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 think I鈥檝e made quite a bit of progress, and I think learning with WEA has helped quite a lot. I鈥檓 going to keep on learning. WEA has opened that up for me.鈥
