History: The Myths Behind our Constellations

Ever looked up at the night sky, or the signs of the zodiac, and wondered how the constellations got their names? Why anyone would think those random dots were 鈥渙bviously鈥 a picture of some strange creature? Or what the stories are behind them? This one-session course picks out some of them that are appropriate to the time of year, and shows why they were important, what their myths are, and how the stories fit together. Today, 23rd April, is St George鈥檚 Day, and so we will look at the various myths behind Draco, the Dragon. That includes how the continent of Europe got its name, the founding of Thebes, how Hercules tricked Atlas, and the great war between the Olympians and the Giants. The poor dragon gets killed every time (though not by George).

History: Aphra Behn: Poet, Playwright, Prisoner, Spy. Her Life & Times

Join tutor Michael Long on this fascinating one-off session, presented as part of Women's month, looking at the life of Aphra Behn. Aphra Behn was a playwright, poet, translator and royal spy. She was a woman in a world of men, a staunch Royalist, a spy, and condemned as a scarlet woman with loose morals. She was also the first woman in England to identify herself as a professional writer. She wrote to suit the occasion, and she wrote to make money. This is a brief look at her life and times rather than a focus on her literary achievements.

Art Appreciation: American Art c1800-1914

In this course, we will discuss a range of works produced by American artists during the period from around 1800, when the United States was still a relatively new nation, to about 1914, by when it was established as a global economic superpower. We will explore how art engaged with social developments and historical events over this period of rapid expansion. This will be an opportunity to consider the work of some artists (such as J A M Whistler, Mary Cassatt, and John Singer Sargent) familiar to European audiences, and others (such as Thomas Cole, Frederick Church, Thomas Eakins, and George Bellows) who are much lauded in America but less well-known in Britain.

History: Intermediate- The Viking Age

The Vikings were the terror of western Europe in the 9th Century and remain one of the most striking and enduring topics in history. We will examine how Anglo-Saxon England almost collapsed under the weight of the Viking threat; making a detailed exploration of the life and times of Anglo-Saxon England and the other realms of the British Isles as the former Mercian hegemony was lost and as they faced the onslaught of the Vikings. In particular, we will consider what may have motivated the Norsemen, how they achieved their success, and how the Saxon kingdoms responded to the crisis.
